Didn’t the Rich Help Make America Great, Too?.?

Didn’t the Rich Help Make America Great, Too?.

In a recent campaign speech, Sen. Hillary Clinton said, “It is not rich people who made America great, it is hardworking Americans.” If you are rich, or know someone who is rich, this statement might strike you as extremely odd.

When used in the same sentence, the terms “rich” and “hardworking” make for redundant prose. The rich are frequently driven by a relentless work ethic that causes them to toil extremely long hours in their chosen professions. Successful entrepreneurs, in fact, are rarely successful retirees, given the certain high they get from working hard. And unless they’re among the small percentage of Americans who inherited their wealth, they have become successful — and rich — only because they have solved previously unmet market needs.

Indeed, contrary to the perception that the rich exploit their way to wealth, the surest path to riches involves fulfilling the desires of the vast majority of people who are not rich. For that alone, the rich are central to what has made America great. If you are in doubt about this fact, why not revisit a little business history.

That John D. Rockefeller, forever synonymous with the word “rich,” named his company Standard Oil was no accident. At the time, the kerosene that Americans used to light their homes claimed an average of 6,000 deaths per year. But his consolidation of the previously inefficient and unwieldy kerosene industry made for a commodity that was increasingly accessible and safe for all Americans to use. Safe and efficient became the new standard.

And while Thomas Edison did not invent the light bulb, he created the first commercially viable incandescent bulb for the masses. In founding Edison Electric, thanks to financing from the very rich J.P. Morgan and the affluent Vanderbilt family, he made plain that “We will make electricity so cheap that only the rich will burn candles.”

Edison’s electricity innovations of course threatened Standard Oil’s kerosene products with obsolescence, but with Henry Ford’s founding of his eponymous car company in 1903, there was soon an even greater need for oil byproducts. Ford, who died a very rich man, created the Model T in 1908 with the average American in mind. And sure enough, the $825 price tag in 1908 fell every year thereafter, thus enabling more and more Americans to experience the freedom that comes with motorized transportation.

See the progression? One entrepreneurs’ innovation leads to more innovation and more rich entrepreneurs. The story continues . . .

With Americans increasingly traveling by car, Howard Johnson created a roadside restaurant chain of the same name in 1925. By 1952 it was the largest restaurant chain in the world — one that included affordable lodging for an American population on the go. Recognizing that there was room for more entrants in this space, Ray Kroc bought the small McDonald’s chain of restaurants and arguably made it the best-known brand name in the world.

Then, as America’s middle class grew, consumer needs expanded, opening the door for Sam Walton who in 1962 founded the first Wal-Mart in Bentonville, Arkansas. While Walton’s creation made him America’s richest man, he enriched his customer base by offering previously inaccessible goods not only at low prices, but eventually the lowest prices possible. To this day, Wal-Mart shoppers get a “raise” every time they walk into one of these stores.

More modernly, we have our mega-moguls in the technology space. Bill Gates’s creation of Microsoft made computer-operating software available to the masses while enabling both individuals and businesses to become exponentially more efficient. And the fact that computers are increasingly the norm in businesses, classrooms, and homes is in no small part due to Michael Dell’s innovations with inventory management. Dell made hardware that was once unique, ubiquitous.

Notably, our rich entrepreneurs didn’t stop improving our lives with their commercial genius. From Rockefeller to Ford to Gates, they have established foundations that have and will continue to tackle the problems of education, poverty, and health that vex us to this day. And for tomorrow’s entrepreneurs, the wealth accumulated by our business forebears will serve as capital for new innovations that will continue to make our lives better and more fulfilling.

Hillary Clinton wants to distinguish between the rich and the hardworking. But the two are not mutually exclusive. And while the senator is correct in lauding the efforts of industrious Americans, she is unwise to demean the staggering efforts of the vital few rich who have done so much to make America great.

Please tell me about major in graduate school in USA.?

Posted on August 2nd, 2011 in small business management software by

I am thinking about going to Grad School in U.S. Right now I am doing a system engineer in Hong Kong. My job is managing a project team, and building a customized computer system for clients.
Example of my detailed job is to estimate Software/Hardware/SI, and negotiate with clients,
select Hardware/Software, fix the specification of application, design of application and system, and so on. Sometimes in a small project, I do even technical things, like building OS(Win/Solaris), programming, and tuning of RDBMS.
In Grad School, I want to extend in this direction, but the most things I want to focus is technical skill, like Program, DB Management, Nework, OS, and Program. I want to less emphasize on Project Management, or Business side.
In this case, what would be the best major for me?
I do not really understand what’s the difference among computer science, information technology, system engineering, information systems, electrical & computer engineering. Please Help!

If I want to get into my uncle’s Life Insurance Business should I become an Actuary?

Posted on July 24th, 2011 in small business management software by

He has been flat out clear he will not provide relatives with jobs unless they go to school. Should I become an Actuary?

The one thing I fear is that the job seems kind of boring but it pays well. Check out this careercritique review:

“I am a P&C worker with 6 months experience. As a student I had a strong grasp of what actuaries do, but never really had a clue what their work life is like from day to day. So here it is, at least from my limited experience:

We are assigned different states. We are given a ton of data that represents premium trends, loss trends, industry trends, and these are called our indications. Then we make certain predictions and recommendations, but we are kept on a short leash; the software does most of the heavy lifting, and we make small judgment calls. We check each others work. Then meetings are conducted, and these gradually become more formal until the final meeting is with upper management/executive level. After all this work, a consensus is arrived at – a set of new rates.

All of this involves reading and compiling reports, checking others work at meetings, and implementation. Some computer skills are needed to…..Access, Excel, other MS Office programs

Cant say its very glamarous but I like it. You will too, if the work style and subject matter fits your personality. ”

Please help me with this case study.?

Gem Infosys a small software company has decided to better secure their computer systems after a malware attack shut down their network operations for two full days. The organization uses a firewall, three file servers, two web servers, one Windows 2008 Active Directory server for user access and authentication, ten PCs and a broadband connection to the Internet. The management at Gem needs you to formulate an incident response policy to reduce network down-time if future incidents occur. Develop an incident response policy that covers the development of incident response team, disaster recovery process and business continuity planning.
Yes, that’s one way to look at the meaning of case study. A case study is where you analyze a situation and give a solution “The case should have enough information in it that can understand what the problem is and, after thinking about it and analyzing the information, the readers should be able to come up with a proposed solution.”

Ever thought that this is an example case study to be answered? I’m trying to answer different exercises in this book to review myself for the upcoming finals and it says “case study” so don’t blame me if you want a real “case study.”

The question, can anyone help throw in more ideas to find a solution? “Develop an incident response policy that covers the development of incident response team, disaster recovery process and business continuity planning.”

DRU WILLIAMS

We exchanged a couple more emails and finally started chatting in Yahoo! Messenger. He sent me cc info to purchase check cashing software but it was in a womans name and I did not do it. He then, today, sent me a check for close to $4,000 to purchase any office equipment I needed, including blank business checks, printer, stamps, waybills, and envelopes. I am suppose to take $250 out for myself and then I need to wire $300 to another person and keep the rest in my checking for future purchases. He says I am going to be doing his payroll out of home and will be paid $500 per week. Earlier when I mentioned that he sent me a womans cc information, the persons information on the waybill was hers and I could not make out the name that was signed on the check. The check came from Wells Fargo Bank and the company name was new instruments something or other. I cashed the check so I am not sure exactly what was on there. I am going to go get a copy of it tomorrow. I figured I would cash the check to see if it would actually clear since even if it don’t I won’t be charged any fees because it didn’t clear. Thing is, I have no idea if this crap is legitimate. Has anyone experienced anything like this?? I don’t want to get into any legal trouble over this. Please let me know. Thanks.

I want to partition a active hard drive in XP?

Posted on June 18th, 2011 in small business management software by

I have an 80 gig hard drive in a win xp pc. there is 50gb free and I want to create a 40gb partition.
I have tried the following from a cmd promt.
diskpart.exe > list disk > select disk 0 > create extended partition size=40000.
This dosnt seem to do anything and I cant seem to do it from the disk management utility either. can you actually format a HD via a cmd promt when it is active?
If not, why not and what is the best (free if possible) software for doing this.
I also want to do this on a windows small business server in the future.
I dont have the option of adding a second HD just yet so any halp woul be appriciated.

Help! Female co-worker is driving me crazy!!?

Posted on June 9th, 2011 in small business management software by

There is a woman at work whose behavior is driving me nuts. The place I work for is a small business (less than 2 dozen employees). I’ve worked there for about two years now, and she’s worked there for about 3 years. Technically, her title is the same as mine, but she behaves and is often treated like a member of management.

That’s all fine and good, but this woman goes out of her way to step on other people to make herself and her ideas dominate the entire office environment. I can’t do my work without her stopping to tell me what I should do differently. She will literally stand over my shoulder and ask me “so.. how’s it going?” That sentence right there makes me cringe. No matter what I say or what I show her i’m doomed. I have tried ignoring her and telling her it’s not a big deal, but it’s a small office, and everybody knows everybody else’s business. She always insists on putting her two cents in, and she acts like she’s doing the world a favor. The trouble is, her criticism is always negative and she never offers any useful suggestions. Her favorite thing to suggest is that you put your project on hold until she figures out what she wants to do with it. Yeah, right. Most people would probably blow her off. Hard to do with her. She tends to throw a big fit and finds plently of other ways to make your work day intolerable if you don’t show her everything you’re doing.

I’ve been noticing a pattern lately. I’ll be working on something, the manager will come by and give me some suggestions, a few words of encouragement, and the go ahead to proceed. Then after a few days, this co-worker will appear (after she knows I’ve been working on this project for a little while) and she’ll get all huffy and tell me i’m doing it all wrong. She’ll pick it apart in the cruelest possible way until all the things I felt good about in the project are gone. Where was she two days ago, when I first started? Why didn’t she give me a game plan then? I don’t understand her logic. She’ll rip everything apart, and tell me all the things I did wrong, yet, she never gives me any suggestions on what I should do to make it right. It’s almost like she enjoys making other people feel two inches tall. She has this look that she gives people that makes my skin crawl. As if to say, “you better do as I say or i’ll rip out your eyeballs and eat them for lunch” She also has this habit of going to the manager and convincing her that what i’m doing is all wrong. The next thing I know i’m being told by my manager (the same person who just gave me the thumbs up to proceed) that I need to scrap everything and put the entire project on hold until my co-worker and management figure out what they want to do.

It’s confusing and unproductive to have a manager give you the go ahead and then make you scrap your work based on another employee’s opinions. It’s insulting. I don’t appreciate someone posing as a manager ripping my stuff apart and acting like what i’ve done is child’s play. I’m the only one there that even has a clue how to use the software needed to complete the project. And the other day my co-worker asked that I explain how the software works. First of all, it took me years to acquire what I know about the ins and outs of this software. It isn’t something you learn overnight. And secondly… what? Is she serious?? Is she trying to push me off the ledge here? She’s nuts, I tell you. And as good as she is at criticizing other people’s ideas, she has very few solid ideas herself. She’s also unorganized, and myself and my other co-workers have noticed that it takes forever just to get projects off the ground when she’s at the wheel. I just don’t understand why management keep going along with whatever my co-worker wants. It’s bad for morale and productivity. Maybe they don’t realize what’s really going on? Or maybe they are trying to avoid conflict? I don’t know. I need help though. I don’t know how to deal with this person. Any suggestions for what I could say to her? Should I approach my manager about my co-workers behavior? If so, What should I say? Any thoughts or similar experiences would be appreciated. Thanks!
