Is this a good personal statement for a Masters?

Posted on June 27th, 2011 in document management software by

Hey,

I am applying for a software project management masters and This is my personal statement. It’s 600 words so thanks to anyone who takes the time to read it and comment.

Dear Sir / Madam,

My name is Joe Bloggs, I am a Bsc. Commercial Software Development graduate currently residing in Dublin and working for an exciting social network aggregating software company. I wish to continue my studies to Masters level to further my career to becoming a project manager for my company. The company is rapidly expanding and I would like to have the tools needed to be an integral part of the companies future success.

Distance learning is an obvious choice for me to complete a Masters. I would like to continue to be based in Dublin improving my work experience and applying what I am learning to my work as i learn it. In my studying I am completley self motivated, target driven and do not need to be in a taught environment. I often learn about new technologies and methodologies through reading online journals and blogs and whenever possible, apply what I learn to my work. I find the best way for me to learn is through visual displays – I generally think in pictures. I find flow charts, presentations and diagrams etc. the best way for me to learn. When I don’t fully understand a topic I am not afraid to ask questions and research on the internet as well as academic libraries.

I currently work as a lead QA engineer on a well known product delivered to a large German based European telco. This work, which I have been performing for 18 months now, has exposed me to many areas of project management and work. I have constant deadlines and milestones which need to be met and am required to assess risks almost on a daily basis. I have been involved in each phase of the project from right at the beginning and partake in tasks such as requirements gathering and analysis. Because I work for an agile software company, I constantly have to deal with changing requirements and often liase with the customer regarding these and provide estimations of man days required and effort. I have been completely geared towards learning to change plans to suit changing needs. After this, The plan is executed and I am the person in charge of ensuring continuous QA and finally signing off on the product for delivery.

I am very interested in project management, I have recently joined the PMI Ireland chapter and attended a HRM evening in the University of Limerick in Ireland which I found to be very interesting and made it clear to me that I would like to work in the project management field. My lifelong interest in software / computing led to me choosing this course which I hopefully will be accepted to study. A particular interest of mine is the agile software development methodology and I would like to see how the agile philosophies can be applied to project management as in the past I know that usual management frameworks and the agile methodology have not worked especially well together.

The Software Project Management course in Aberdeen University seems to be perfect for me. It is geared toward project management in the software sector. It will not require me to leave my job in a company that I am committed to and it is flexible enough for working professionals like myself to undertake without changing my lifestyle too much such as moving to another city. I have not found anything that I think looks this intertesting locally.

Please find attached with this application my professional references and supporting documents. I look forward to hearing from you in the near future.

Kind Regards,

P.S Please disregard any spelling mistakes, the final draft will be checked for this

Upgrading a computer Homework help?

Posted on June 24th, 2011 in order management software by

A department store plans to upgrade its IT infrastructure to support a new order-processing application with rich features. The store currently uses eight stand-alone computers when customers check out. The specifications of these computers are:

Pentium processor
4 GB hard disk
128 MB RAM
Windows 98
The management of the store wants to upgrade four of the computers and use them to process client orders. The initial study done by the management reveals that the computers will perform the following tasks:

Run an order-processing application that requires a multiprocessing operating system. The application will take orders from customers over the Internet, process the orders, and create invoices.

Communicate with customers using e-mail to resolve customer queries.

Store customer data on the local computer. The store will use this data to promote new products.
The department store needs you to upgrade the four computers. Find the necessary equipment from online vendors to upgrade the computers. submit a cost report, a list of hardware/software needed, and a labor estimate for upgrading the four computers.

Masters Degree worth it for Software Engineer?

Posted on June 24th, 2011 in database management software by

Hi,

I’m 23 and have just graduated from a fairly average ranking uk university (although it has good employability) with a first class honours degree. I graduated top of my course of 40 (with a 10% mark gap) and got a 92% for my dissertation. I worked really hard, and continue to work really hard: developing and learning in my spare time most evenings.

However, I feel that I’m not utilizing this at all in my current job which is fairly below average compared to my course mates (due to the roll changing. I’ve gained some really good experience, but I feel its hitting a peak pretty quickly, so I have been considering doing a Masters degree either in the UK or the US.

I was just wondering if anyone has any opinions on whether a masters degree in software engineering is worth the time and money?? I feel programming is my strongest area, but I do have a lot of interest in development methods and management, and plan to become a project manager at some point. I’d say the areas i’d be looking at studying are:

Complex OO design
Design patterns
Complex Algorithms
Database Performance

but also

Development Methodologies (Agile etc.)
Software Management
Cost Estimation etc.

thanks in advance!

I want to partition a active hard drive in XP?

Posted on June 18th, 2011 in small business management software by

I have an 80 gig hard drive in a win xp pc. there is 50gb free and I want to create a 40gb partition.
I have tried the following from a cmd promt.
diskpart.exe > list disk > select disk 0 > create extended partition size=40000.
This dosnt seem to do anything and I cant seem to do it from the disk management utility either. can you actually format a HD via a cmd promt when it is active?
If not, why not and what is the best (free if possible) software for doing this.
I also want to do this on a windows small business server in the future.
I dont have the option of adding a second HD just yet so any halp woul be appriciated.

I have to take a course on Computer Science at another college before the fall but which course do I take?

Posted on June 18th, 2011 in enterprise management software by

Just to begin. I know absolutely nothing about programming but the same applied to my cousins who are 2nd/4th year computer science majors. So I’m thinking it’s worth a shot. I have to take a computer science course so I can have basic knowledge before I actually enter college. However, the college I will be attending in the fall is quite far so I have to take a intro comp sci course at a college closer to my home. Now I’m confused on which course to take.

The first one is called “Internet Computing w/ Distributed Computing”
Here’s the course description. “Fundamental concepts of Internet computing and component – based software engineering. Web application architecture. HTTP protocol. Presentations tier techniques: servlets and JavaServer Pages. Application server technique: Enterprise JavaBeans. Introduction to Web services for J2EE.”

The second one is called Windows System Programming
“This course provides an introductory overview of system programming in the Windows environment, mainly focusing on system-level programming based on OS services and other APIs. Topics include system calls, file I/O, files and directories, memory management, process control, inter-process communication (IPC), and socket-based network programming. Coursework includes programming assignments and a final exam.”

Which one should I take?
Thanks.
